Dear Fellow Oregonians,

A very dear man who led this state with grace and distinction recently sent me this quote that reflects upon my leadership qualities:

Your vote is your voice. For nearly 10 years Oregonians have been able to count on me to defend their right to be heard in Salem.

As your State Senator, I have courageously and consistently stood up to powerful interests, shining a bright light on waste, fraud and abuse in our state government.

I am running for Secretary of State because every vote counts.

There are no hanging chads in Oregon, but I understand that our elections need to be conducted with the highest integrity. Our century-old ballot initiative process must likewise be free of fraud and corruption. I’ve shown a willingness to stand up to powerful interests on both sides of the political aisle to fight for what’s right.

As Secretary of State and chief auditor of state government, I will work tirelessly to ensure our tax dollars are being well spent and that every dollar of your money is accounted for. I have built my reputation in the legislature on accountability by streamlining programs, pooling costs to save dollars, requiring transparency in budgeting and limiting golden parachutes.

I will continue to advocate for our children and our environment through wise management of our state trust lands that provide millions of dollars to our public schools each year.

Thanks to my efforts as chair of the Senate Education & General Government Committee and as a hard-working member of the Ways & Means Subcommittee on Education, public school funding was increased by 18%, and college will be within reach for more students.

I will continue to work hard to restore the confidence of the citizens of Oregon in our government’s ability to work for you. Thank you for your support.
